Authors: Johanna m. de Kort* , Conor V. Dolan*,** and Dorret I. boomsma** In the classical twin study, genetic and environmental influences on a phenotype are usually estimated under the assumption that genotype-environment covariance (Ge covariance) is absent. We explore possibilities to accommodate Ge covariance in longitudinal data using the genetic simplex model. First, the genetic simplex model is presented, accompanied by a brief summary of results found in cognitive developmental studies. Second, Ge covariance is specified via niche picking and sibling effects. Third, numerical and analytical identification is established, and the statistical power to detect Ge covariance is examined. In a simplex model comprising four time points, Ge covariance can be accommodated by introducing phenotype to environment cross-lagged pathways, either within or between twins. by using different parameter constraints within the genetic simplex, the extended models are numerically and analytically identified. The power to detect Ge covariance is relatively low and therefore large sample sizes are needed.

GE Covariance Through Phenotype to Environment Transmission: An Assessment in Longitudinal Twin Data and Application to Childhood Anxiety
We considered identification of phenotype (at occasion t) to environment (at occasion t + 1) transmission in longitudinal model comprising genetic, common and unique environmental simplex models (autoregressions). This type of transmission, which gives rise to genotype-environment covariance, is considered to be important in developmental psychology. Having established identifying constraints, ...
متن کاملEnvironmental influences on the longitudinal covariance of expressive vocabulary: measuring the home literacy environment in a genetically sensitive design.
BACKGROUND Despite the well-replicated relationship between the home literacy environment and expressive vocabulary, few studies have examined the extent to which the home literacy environment is associated with the development of early vocabulary ability in the context of genetic influences. This study examined the influence of the home literacy environment on the longitudinal covariance of ex...
متن کاملHeritability and the equal environments assumption: evidence from multiple samples of misclassified twins.
Classically derived estimates of heritability from twin models have been plagued by the possibility of genetic-environmental covariance. Survey questions that attempt to measure directly the extent to which more genetically similar kin (such as monozygotic twins) also share more similar environmental conditions represent poor attempts to gauge a complex underlying phenomenon of GE-covariance. T...
متن کاملExamination of the causes of covariation between conduct disorder symptoms and vulnerability to drug dependence.
Conduct disorder (CD) symptoms and substance dependence commonly co-occur. Both phenotypes are highly heritable and a common genetic influence on the covariation has been suggested. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which genes and environment contribute to the covariance between CD and drug dependence using twins from the Colorado Longitudinal Twin Sample and the Colorado Tw...
متن کاملSimultaneous genetic analysis of longitudinal means and covariance structure in the simplex model using twin data.
A longitudinal model based on the simplex model is presented to analyze simultaneously means and covariance structure using univariate longitudinal twin data. The objective of the model is to decompose the mean trend into components which can be attributed to those genetic and environmental factors which give rise to phenotypic individual differences and a component of unknown constitution whic...
